It was given by Robert Stillington, Bishop of Bath and Wells, who reportedly came forth and gave eyewitness testimony that he had personally witnessed the exchange of marriage vows between Edward IV and Eleanor Talbot. The casual reader of history is probably familiar with the evidence produced in 1483. Any claims of an irregular marriage were to be referred to the English ecclesiastical courts and adjudicated by their custom and legal procedure. Yet England, despite rejecting many elements of medieval church doctrine on marriage irregularities and children’s illegitimacy, retained a feature of ancient Roman Christian custom. In courts throughout fifteenth-century Continental Europe, the existence of a previous marriage contract would not have been referred to an ecclesiastical court, but would have been determined by their own civil or quasi-secular courts. This essay will not get into the witchcraft claim, but will focus instead on the alleged precontract between Edward IV and Eleanor Talbot. The most controversial aspects of Titulus Regius are the other two grounds – witchcraft and precontract. These facts are accepted by virtually all historians. It alienated many of the king’s most important supporters, the most notable being Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, aka the ‘Kingmaker’. The announcement of the Woodville marriage in 1464 – presented months later as a fait accompli and denying the public the spectacle of a grand wedding – was not greeted with universal joy and acceptance. A king’s marriage was a matter of great importance for the realm as it provided an opportunity for England to form a military and economic alliance with a foreign power, and it involved carefully managed negotiations between high-level diplomats over things like the future queen-consort’s dowry and how she would be financially supported. Edward IV’s wedding to Woodville was conducted without any input from the king’s ministers, it was ‘clandestine’ in the eyes of the medieval Church, and it deviated from centuries of English royal practice. There is no controversy surrounding the first and third legal grounds asserted in Titulus Regius. ![]() Third, it was improper under church law (‘And here also we consider how that the said pretensed marriage was made prively and secretly, without edition of banns, in a private chamber, a profane place, and not openly in the face of the Church, after the law of God’s Church’).įinally, Edward IV had been previously married to Eleanor Talbot (‘And how also that at the time of contract of the same pretensed marriage, and before and long time after, the said King Edward was and stood married and trothplight to one Dame Eleanor Butler, daughter of the old earl of Shrewsbury, with whom the same King Edward had made a precontract of matrimony, long time before he made the said pretensed marriage with the said Elizabeth Grey in manner and form abovesaid’). Second, it was achieved through witchcraft (‘And also by sorcery and witchcraft committed by the said Elizabeth and her mother Jaquette, Duchess of Bedford, as the common opinion of the people and the public voice and fame is through all this land … shall be proved sufficiently in time and place convenient’). ![]() On close inspection, Titulus Regius asserted four reasons justifying the invalidation of Edward IV’s marriage to Woodville:įirst, he did so without consulting his own royal council, government, or the peers of the realm (‘And here also we consider how that the said pretensed marriage betwixt the above-named King Edward and Elizabeth Grey was made of great presumption, without the knowing and assent of the lords of this land’). The grounds for the legal claim were enumerated in a petition brought forth to the Three Estates in June 1483, and were later entered into the January 1484 rolls of Parliament under the Act commonly referred to as Titulus Regius (title of the king). Richard III remains one of the most controversial kings of England because of the manner in which he came to the throne: not by battle or conquest, but by a legal claim that Edward IV’s marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was invalid, rendering their children ineligible to stand in the line of succession. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, if we do not receive the full minimum due on a statement within 59 days of the date of that statement, or any event of default (other than a payment default) occurs under your Cardmember Agreement, all special payment plans on your account will terminate and (i) you will then be charged interest on the balances outstanding on such plans at the applicable regular annual rate from the day after the date of your next statement, and (ii) the balances outstanding will form part of the balance due on that statement. ![]() ![]() This tends to be what I do with difficult non-fiction to get through it (like that Bakhtin guy that popped up in virtually every class I took in graduate school.)īecause English teachers are darned good readers most books won’t give us a problem. I write a comment off to the side about what I think the passage means, or why it matters. I can find myself in the weeds with some difficult reading sometimes, and annotation helps me process what I read. Annotating helps you understand what you read. Annotating helps keep my focus on the task at hand instead of on other enticing ideas. Annotating helps minimize the usual distractions (should I work out today? Are we out of milk? Can I just think about how great that episode of “Modern Love” was?) I can easily read a book or article and think that I’ve read it, when my mind was actually elsewhere. I have an easily distracted mind and sometimes I need to force myself to pay attention even while reading something I’m really into. So here are five reasons from my own experience where annotation has been a useful tool. We want to empower our students with a reason to annotate. And even when we entered into the chat, I had my pen in hand once again ready to annotate as people said things I wanted to remember and called attention to passages that I might have missed. ![]() I was reading it in part for a discussion group, and wanted to be prepared to contribute. I read The Ninth Hour strictly for pleasure, but with White Fragility I had a different “why.” For one thing, I actively read this text to be able to refer back to it. While I read McDermott, I studied DiAngelo, and that meant I had my pen in hand for White Fragility, underlining important quotes and writing occasionally in the margins. However, the way I read them was completely different. The other was White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. ![]() One was T he Ninth Hour by Alice McDermott. Here’s an example I read two books recently. And to do that, we need to give them a reason why annotating is important. But in order to do that, we need to make annotation something that students do for themselves, and not for the teacher. Not everything they read, but those things for which annotation is an important part of the process. Of course the answer the question in the title is YES! We want our students to be able to annotate. I don’t always make our bed, even if a NAVY Seal tells me to. After all, if you’re just going to get back into the bed at night, why bother making it at all? Fair enough. Annotation is something they do because someone in charge tells them to do it, not because it makes sense. Students are strongly encouraged to use these symbols until they are able to establish their own preferred annotation styles and modes over time. For many of our students, annotating is like making their bed. There is a common language and understanding for annotation among the students and the teacher. This set of guidelines, which is made into a bookmark, is to help guide the students as they make their thinking visible. Thus, a set of teacher-designed guidelines for the annotation of narrative texts is carefully crafted. Porter-O’Donnell (2004) suggested that students be given a bookmark each that detailed ideas for symbols to use in annotation and the types of comments they could make. Annotating a text can help students understand difficult material better and encourage active reading. It can also help students to converse with their teacher on any particular topic.Īt AIPS, students are taught annotating skills. It helps students focus on how they pronounce their words, express themselves clearly and expand on their ideas that they share with others. Although the story and characters have not been that interesting or new, the show is still enjoyable and the cliffhanger ending with the wolf will have viewers on the edge of their seat for the next episode. Despite this, the show is still pretty good and entertaining, with the bikers scene being a good balance of drama and melodrama. This episode has shown the slow build up of the season, as it has felt like an extended pilot across four episodes. The bikers scene in this episode did not necessarily add to the story, but it gave some entertainment value. There is also a huge cliffhanger at the end of the episode as a wolf appears while their son runs off into the woods. However, the show is still enjoyable and Beth is trying to be made sympathetic all of a sudden, despite her past actions. This season has been slow-burning so far, but the story and characters have not been that interesting or new. It reminded viewers of how powerful and scary John can be when provoked. The tension heightened when Jamie Dutton, John Dutton's son, came face-to-face with Rip Wheeler, who had become somewhat of an enemy of the Duttons.
